Introduction: The best way to experience Montana Carefully selected from many hundreds of hikes in the Treasure State, the trips in this book are 100 of the best walks in Montana. Every part of the state is represented, so no matter where you live or where you’re visiting, a choice of great hikes is nearby. The hikes also include a mix of difficulty levels, from easy strolls suitable for everyone to extended backpacking trips on which experienced hikers can fully escape the rat race. Personal preferences were necessarily a factor in selecting these hikes, but understanding the criteria used will give you a better idea of what kind of trips you can expect to find in this book. Although no single attribute was required for every hike, the most important criterion was outstanding scenery. Water features, such as clear streams, waterfalls, and mountain lakes, were also significant attractions. Similarly, wildlife sightings enhance any outdoor experience, as do wildflowers, fall colors, old-growth forests, and interesting geologic features. Although the quality of fishing played no part in the selection criteria, when good fishing is available, I make sure to mention it. My goal was to include only the best of my countless trips around this state. Somewhat surprisingly, most of these hikes have never been covered in any previous statewide guidebook.
