The division between the sacred and the secular can be a tricky one. When we begin to make distinctions like that, it’s easier to stop looking for God in certain places and spaces. But our God will always be bigger than our human minds can comprehend. He will always show up in places we don’t expect and in ways that surprise and even disrupt us. Why would we expect anything less? All we have to do is read His Word to see that He has never been into the comfortable or expected. Those things don’t wake hearts and stir souls. He’s after our whole selves, not just a few moments of our attention. So while it’s tempting to divide the world into categories, we would do well to remain open about where He might show up. Was Moses looking through bushes, hoping to hear a voice? Was the world watching a tiny stable in Bethlehem just waiting for a Savior to appear? Who knows how He’ll speak to us today?
