There are many ways to tell a life. I grew up trilingual (English, French, Creole) in the 1940s and 50s in the small rural settlement of Vacherie, Louisiana, about 50 miles up the Mississippi River from New Orleans. That particular community, including my very large extended family, provided me with a long list of memorable characters and events, a few of which I recall for you in this book.As a teenager Colin Gravois dreamed of becoming a trial lawyer, but those plans were put on hold when he was drafted into the Army at the height of the Vietnam conflict. After service in Germany, he opted for an overseas discharge, in order to travel around Europe before his planned return to the US and law school. After touring most of Western Europe he made one final trip to Paris to say goodbye – and that visit has lasted over 50 years. He “perfected the fine art of café sitting” in the heady days following the 1968 Paris student uprising, then worked as a proofreader and features writer for the International Herald Tribune, before starting his own travel business. He now resides in the Paris suburb of Antony from May to December and the rest of the year in his boyhood home of Vacherie.
