Pocket gophers, moles, and other rodents eat the seeds.IN THE GARDEN: Difficult to cultivate. Best grown in very deep, well-drained sandy soils. Sego Lily Calochortus nuttallii Sego lily, in times of abundant rainfall, can experience a “super bloom” meaning that huge colonies form. This happened near Glen Canyon, Utah, in May 2019. Although the bulbs are, indeed, edible, they are considered a last resort food source as they have little flavor. The bulbs were roasted, baked, or made into porridge. Navajo and Hopi considered it food for children. The raw roots were scooped out and filled with a sweetener, such as sugar or honey, and eaten like candy. The Hopi also used the flowers in ceremony. In spring, boys collected bouquets of sego lily and larkspur. It was customary for the girls to chase them to try to capture the flowers. This plant is also called mariposa lily because the flowers look like butterflies. Mariposa is Spanish for butterfly.
