Testimonials Preview from Chapter One: It happened on an ordinary Monday, the day after Mother’s Day. I was up early to be at work before seven o’clock and our household was in the morning bustle to start our week. I breastfed the baby in a hurry, annoyed by how easily he was being distracted by his big brother. I needed him to finish nursing so I could get to work, but he kept stopping to look around at every noise that was made. I stroked that wild wisp of hair on the top of his head, trying to keep his attention on his task. Westin, the big brother, ran by and the baby pulled away again. Done or not, we had to call it quits. I stood Lachlan up at the windowsill so he could look outside, and I hurried out the door. My only goodbye was a wave through the car window at my two boys and their daddy watching me drive away. I was working as a physician assistant in a demanding general and bariatric surgery practice. My workday started out with typical Monday busyness, but then had an unusual gap in the afternoon schedule… In this downtime, I considered going to pick up the baby from the new daycare for a while. The previous week had been my children’s first week at this daycare, and we were all still adjusting to the new arrangement... I seriously considered that option, but I ended up deciding to use that time to show the new medical student around and to review the technique for the big surgery scheduled that afternoon. At 2:30, I was just grabbing my blue bouffant hat to be appropriately garbed for the sterile space of the operating room when my phone rang with a call from the daycare. I answered a bit hesitantly, wondering what it could be, expecting something entirely routine. It was the voice of the owner on the other end, not one of the young women who actually took care of the kids. He was someone I’d barely met, and I could tell in an instant that he was shaken. His voice quivered, “I need you to come to the daycare. Lachlan is not breathing. The paramedics are here.” Guided Journal Prompts I want to walk hand-in-hand with you in your own journey to authentic integration, peace, and hope. As a way to facilitate this, I have created companion journals. My hope is that these journals will invite you to explore the depths of your own grief so we can wrestle together through the hard parts of being bereaved. Instructions for downloading the journals are given in the book.
