You teach the Adulting 101 course at Texas Tech University. What are the top adulting skills that students are eager to learn? Most of the students are excited to learn about basic skills such as nutrition, laundry, cooking, and finances, but when they get into the class, they realize there is so much more to learn about life that can help them maintain balance. Communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, stress management, and determination are skills that they realize they need as well! In your opinion, how have essential life skills changed within the last 5 years? I think problem-solving has skyrocketed to one of the skills that individuals need the most within the last 5 years. We have the answers to most questions at our fingertips! We can just Google it. We have been trained to find a quick fix or a quick answer, but if you can't find it on Google, individuals lack the skill to move to the next step of the problem-solving process! In the book, I lay out step by step how to solve any problem ranging from “I can't find my keys” to “where should I begin my career?” What is the most intimidating adult skill for your students, and how do you address this? The most intimidating adult skills for my students are managing and investing money! I have several lessons that walk them through terms such as 401K, gross income, net income, taxes withheld, budgeting, and more terms that might seem complicated. I also have them complete real-life simulations such as playspent(dot)org/ and buildyourstax(dot)com. Connecting the lessons to their present-day life helps them to better apply the content and understand the lessons. Cooking and cleaning can seem overwhelming – what are your top tips to help people tackle these responsibilities head-on? a) Take the trash out. Don’t wait until it is overflowing onto the floor. Get rid of the garbage because it can begin to smell really bad and create some gross germs. b) If you spill any food or beverage, clean it up right then and there. c) Make sure each of your belongings has an appropriate spot to “live.” If you take it out of that spot to use it, put it back as soon as you are done. d) When you are first beginning to cook, choose recipes that have fewer ingredients and steps. They are usually easier to prepare. Once you get more experienced, you can choose more complex recipes to follow. The book covers how to manage finances and stay on a budget – what is your top recommendation for how to stay on top of your finances? Following a budget can help you reach your long-term and short-term saving goals, show you where you are overspending, map out your emergency fund, and help you feel less anxious about your financial situation. After creating your personalized budget, which I show you how to do in the book, carry your budget with you on your phone, print it out, or have it in a place where you can view it regularly. Following a budget will help you find freedom in your finances. About the Author: Gencie Houy Gencie Houy is an expert in family and consumer sciences education (FCSE).
