INTRODUCTION An architect’s job is a combination of art and science, but it’s not just about making buildings. It is also about helping to solve the world’s problems, including climate change, pollution, and social inequality. From the basic to more advanced concepts, the exercises in this book work with natural elements such as wind, water, light, and plants to resolve different world challenges such as housing, energy shortages, and food scarcity. Many ideas in this book were collected from contributors around the world, giving you the opportunity to learn from different histories and cultures as you learn to build to suit the needs of local people. GENERAL CONSTRUCTION Can you draw and build? These are fundamental skills for architects. We have six exercises to test and strengthen your drawing, measuring, and model-making skills. In this section, you will learn about scales, symbols, and orientation. These tools will help you create a map or plan, so you can graphically tell people what they need to know about your building without saying a word. ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORY Buildings around the world have different forms and functions that reflect the culture, materials, climate, and people who live there. Using local building materials is one sustainable way of building because it helps reduce the carbon footprint. Transporting materials requires a lot of resources, and it can be far more sustainable and less wasteful to use what is available in your area. Local materials also help you create buildings that are unique to your cities. As you’ll learn in this chapter, sometimes designs must also address the rising sea level or find innovative ways to improve indoor air quality. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Landscape architects create spaces such as parks, waterfronts, boardwalks, plazas, and playgrounds. These are often seen as the empty spaces between buildings, but they are important because they allow people to connect with natural elements such as light, water, plants, and air. Landscape architects also contribute to the beauty and impact of a building. For example, the Taj Mahal wouldn’t be as impressive as it is if there was not reflective pool and garden in front of it. Fallingwater, a house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in Pennsylvania, has a house seemingly hovering on its own above a waterfall. SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE This chapter takes your designs to the extremes. First, you’ll design a place to survive during extreme cold, exile, pandemic, food shortages, and water shortages. These conditions are becoming important scenarios for architects to consider and plan for. We’ll focus on creating architecture that works effectively with materials and the environment. These projects also ask you think about how to build houses that allow us to live more safely in the twenty-first century. BRIEF INTRODUCTION ON CITY PLANNING Through city planning architects can help encourage healthy lifestyles and make it easier for people to live in the city and enjoy city life. It is sometimes hard to get everything in balance, but it is important to be attentive the needs of everyone. This chapter explores different elements in city planning including transportation, density, building height, air movement, utilities, sunlight, zoning, history, and accessibility.
