Author Q&A Tell us a bit about the premise of All My Friends. In All My Friends Bina has finally gained the courage to start a band and found bandmates who click with her—no small feat, as we learned in All Together Now. But after the band gets their first taste of success and sees one of their songs licensed for TV, Bina and her bandmates find that the biggest obstacle to their dreams of stardom is their own parents. If they want to make a record, they’ll have to subvert the system and break a few rules. Bina has such an incredible style. Did you have any style icons in mind when creating her character? I’m drawn to a grungy thrift-store aesthetic that draws on the fashion of the 70s and 80s. I drew on that a bit for Bina—the dress she wears on the cover is a little tribute to Courtney Love and Hole. I also thought a lot about The Go-Go’s, who came out of the LA punk scene but also have this fun, girly aspect that was a big inspiration for Fancy Pink, Bina’s band in All My Friends. This is your third book starring Bina and friends. What has it been like to see your characters grow up book by book? It’s been fun! Getting to hang out with the same characters over multiple books has always been a dream of mine. I like seeing characters grow and change and reconsider their ideas, dreams, relationships. The core message of the book is that friendships change and evolve, but real friends will show up and support you when you need them to. Real friends want to see you shine.
