Auhtor Q&A The first two books in your Astronaut Academy series were just reissued in full color! What was it like going back and adding color to the books? Collaborating with amazing artists like Emmy Hernandez, Fred C. Stresing, and Jesncin was a blast! Their color wizardry completely heightens the emotional stakes of each scene and creates a more dramatic atmosphere for the space station school. Every corner feels infinitely mysterious and the scary bits have more impact. In my head, I always knew which scenes were at night and which were during the “artificial daytime lighting” but could never successfully convey that in black and white. So with the help of the colorists, I was able to flesh out the world of Astronaut Academy, bringing out all the visions of glowing lights, fireballs, and laser beams swirling around my head. For the color editions, it’s also easier to tell how diverse the kids are when you have the full CMYK spectrum to flesh out their character. It really brings them to life, in a more fully realized way, with much more of their quirky personalities shining through. If you were to enroll in one class at Astronaut Academy, what would it be and why? I’d definitely sign up for antigravity gymnastics. Tumbling is fun in general, and with no resistance to hold me back, I could probably just keep spinning into infinity. Unless of course, all that spinning makes me nauseous, in which case, I better stick to a more grounded class, like Advanced Heart Studies...or Locker. What was your inspiration when creating this series? A tasty blend of American comic strips like Peanuts, Japanese anime ala Robotech, old-school video games like Legend of Zelda & the wish-fulfilment aspects of Harry Potter. The diverse cast & changing narrators of Astronaut Academy shine a spotlight on the oddball kids who are often sidekicks in other stories, but at Astronaut Academy get to be their own heroes.
