What is linocut? Linocut is a type of relief printing created by using a linoleum block as a printing plate into which you cut using metal gouges. With relief printing, the material that is removed does not print, therefore making it a negative mark-making technique. Woodcut and wood engraving are also methods of relief printing. Techniques Draw At this first stage of the linocut process, I will show you how to cut a piece of lino to size, then transfer your design onto the lino block, ready to be cut. Cut At stage 2 – Cut – I show you how to cut into the lino block. Print At stage 3 – Print – I show you how to ink and print a lino block. Repeat At this final stage – Repeat – we use the same linocut block to make multiple prints. Projects and things you'll learn Printing Text Working with text can be a challenge with relief printing – the trap into which many printmakers (both new and experienced) fall when trying it for the first time is to produce the letters the ‘right’ way round on the lino block, so the print comes out with the text reading back to front.Whether you use text as part of a larger print that includes snippets of lettering or you want to work with text as the primary image, this project will help you develop your skills, including transposing text so that it reads correctly. From photograph to print This project explores how to translate a linocut print from a photograph by tracing the image onto the lino, and provides you with another chance to practise your fine cutting skills. If you feel less confi dent about your freehand drawing skills, tracing a photograph and translating it into a linocut is a handy technique to try if you have an image to hand that you think would make a particularly striking linocut print. Greeting Cards - Hand printed cards with a difference Linocut prints really do lend themselves to small projects such as greetings cards. This project shows you how to take a simple design and print it onto a card. Whether you are making a unique card for a special occasion, printing handmade Easter or Christmas cards, this project will guide you through the process.
