Mary Ellen Pleasant (Excerpt from Chapter 2: Real Black Heroes) The first self-made Black millionaire was a woman by the name of Mrs. Mary Ellen Pleasant (1817-1904). She was born to a Haitian slave and the son of a Virginian governor. She was bought out of slavery and eventually sent to Nantucket, Massachusetts, where her guardians taught her about abolitionism. After moving to San Francisco, she employed ex-slaves in her own businesses which included farms, laundries, bordellos, and moneylending. She helped to establish the Bank of California. Throughout the 1870s and 1890s, she brought a litany of civil rights lawsuits in California, most of which she won. By 1875, with the help of her silent business partner, Thomas Bell, she was able to amass a fortune of roughly 30 million dollars, which would equate to about 707 million dollars in 2020!
