Four Myths of Essential Oils Myth 1: Essential Oils Never Expire There are very few things in nature that do not expire. (Honey might be the only one.) Essential oils are a product of nature, and the leaves, fruit, and bark that these oils are derived from will eventually decompose. While essential oils may have a longer shelf life than their carrier counterparts, they will expire eventually. Myth 2: There’s Only One Right Way/Oil All-or-nothing thinking serves the essential oil companies more than the consumers of these products. If companies can convince buyers that essential oils can only be used for one purpose, this will drive them to seek more of their products. Myth 3: Just Put the Oil on the Bottom of Your Feet If the aim is for the body to absorb the essential oils, your feet are the worst place to apply. The skin of the feet is thick and callused, making it much more difficult for the oils to absorb into the skin. Ideally, essential oils should only be applied to the feet if they are specifically being treated, such as for pain or cramping. Myth 4: Essential Oils Are Only Dangerous If Ingested The myth about essential oils only being dangerous if they’re consumed is alarming. Dermal application does carry risks. If used improperly, burns, rashes, and sensitivities can and do occur. Get trained. Listen to your body.
