The Beliefs of Confident Parents Confidence exists in all shapes, sizes, colors, creeds, and cultures. In fact, confidence can be boiled down to a few underlying beliefs, all having to do with learning. To be confident, the following things must be true: You believe that learning and development are necessary and continual over a lifetime. You are humbled by the fact that there’s much to still learn, that the term “perfect parent” does not exist. You trust in your kid’s ability to learn (to make mistakes, to fall, to get up, and to make a better choice next time). You trust in your own ability to learn (to make mistakes, to fall, to get up, and to make a better choice next time). These beliefs are a great start, but you may be wondering, Is there any way to improve our confidence as a parent for the child we love? What if we weren’t born unflappable? I’ll be the first to tell you—I flap quite easily! If we weren’t rattled and stressed before becoming a parent, the uncertainty and sheer responsibility of raising a human being introduces a whole host of new doubts, fears, and worries. So, how do we gain confidence? I’ve spent the past seven years since my son’s early childhood years trying to figure that out. And I did it by creating, expanding, and contributing to a learning community of others just like us, all of whom are finding simple ways to gain confidence in ourselves and our children. Emotions, Parenting, and Our Children’s Success What do emotions have to do with our parenting? The short answer: everything. They impact every aspect of our roles. Just as music seals in memories (I’ll bet you can remember a song from your high school prom and certainly from your wedding!), so, too, do our emotions. Consider the memories you are making now with your child. Now think about the fact that the memories your child will recall are those infused with feeling from the most loving, intimate times to the most upsetting, frightening, or sad occasions. How we react in all of those times determines whether or not our children will feel the support and love we want them to in order for them to thrive now and in the future. Isn’t it worth our investment to spend a little time figuring out how we can respond in ways that harmonize with family members by bringing our wisest, most confident selves? Harmonizing Through Social and Emotional Skill-Building When parents and children make music together by practicing social and emotional skills, they are deeply engaged in confident parenting. You are able to experience joy and a loving connection while intentionally learning and developing each other’s skills. Though this takes forethought and focus, life feels easier as you engage your child’s (and your own) motivation to work hard at harmonizing. You find yourself more patient, more understanding, and less likely to nag or worry about controlling your child’s behavior. Because you hold such high hopes and dreams for your children, your passions are stirred when they seem to venture away from your goals for them. But when you offer them the chance to venture, to make choices, to manage relationships, to work through problems, then you don’t fear their choices or missteps or view them as a sidetrack. Those opportunities are the track. It’s all part of your dancing in the learning circle and making music together.
