Conscious Creativity: The Workbook Make This Book Your Own Writing your name in a new notebook or diary is a simple yet significant action, a way of making it yours. The instructions below are to help you personalise this workbook and claim your unique, creative partnership with it. Write your name in capital letters on the front of the book. Write your address and any other addresses you can remember living at somewhere on the cover. Number the pages yourself. Invent a way to attach a pencil or pen to the front cover. Open the book at a random page and tear that page out. Keep the torn page in a used envelope at the back of the book. Make a bookmark from something found outdoors and keep it where the torn page was. Use coloured sticky notes in the book as moveable markers, notekeepers and highlighters. Underline something you have read so far which you want to remind yourself of. Acting On Impulse We all have those impulsive ideas where something fresh and unthought through feels really exciting, even though within a very short space of time the idea’s brilliance and practicality have completely waned. You don’t have to be a novelist to be able to write a convincing negative outcome before you’ve made even the tiniest of practical steps towards a goal. Acting on impulse and working without thought is a knack that you can practise. It always feels slightly daring and very vulnerable, and thoughts of something unexpected and even unpleasant happening as a consequence are inevitable, but just being aware of your impulses and how little or how much you act on them is a good starting point. Choose a certain day of the week to work impulsively through this list. Consciously creating a structure like this can help with pushing boundaries: Smashing Visiting Buying Declaring Shouting Singing Ripping Throwing Observe Your Environment Observe the underneath of a table. Dig a hole outside. Feel a pane of glass without worrying about the mark it will make. Collect any bits or fluff from the bottom of a bag you use every day. Take a clothes peg apart and then try to put it back together Cool and empty the kettle, then put your hand inside and feel around. Explore Your Materials We are surrounded by functional objects with practical purposes that are generally overlooked. Any designed object, from a clothes peg to an armchair, goes through a process where all aspects of the material it is made from are assessed: its composition and properties, how relevant, costly, sustainable, appealing and practical it is, how it behaves and how it could potentially work. If you adopt this detailed approach you will realise that you don’t need to buy expensive supplies from the art shop to explore and experiment – any home is a rich source of unnoticed materials. A wooden spoon, a metal handle, a rusty screw or a paper envelope all contain masses of information not only about design, but about language, culture, natural sciences and a consciousness of the environment. By actively observing and touching a wide variety of materials you can expand your creative consciousness and add to your sensory knowledge.
