What is a Spirit? If we are going to accept that spirits are real, as has been the view of Magicians pretty much everywhere throughout all time except in the 19th to 20th–century English-speaking West, then we need to nail down what we are talking about. Let’s not kid ourselves, we can accept that spirits are real, and even that they are independent, but we must also acknowledge that they exist in a way that is more subtle and fluid than a human or a horse. Fluid or not, we need some kind of operating definition if we are going to work with them: Spirits are organized consciousness. Merriam-Webster defines consciousness as a state or quality of being characterized by sensation, emotion, volition, and thought. I am more or less an animist. I think the universe is conscious. All space and time, pregnant with formless awareness that can organize in endless ways. I don’t know all the ways and I don’t pretend to. Frankly, I think that there are more ways than we even can know. Manifestations of Resonance What is resonance? In sound, it is the reflection from a surface by the synchronous vibration of a neighboring object. If I am in a room full of guitars and strum an E-chord on one of them, the others will resonate with that chord. Something similar happens when you pray. It’s not that a God suddenly stops what they are doing and appears before you in full mind-breaking, gray-hair-inducing fullness. You resonate with that power and the universe responds. If that resonance is made firm in actions like burning candles or herbs with the right properties, writing a petition, or nailing down something ritually, then your prayer is elevated into something else: a spell. This level of manifestation, simple resonance, is the most commonplace manifestation of a spirit’s influence in your life. It accounts for probably 80 percent of magic. Even in some classical grimoires that focus on making spirits appear, active resonance is all that is sought
