The Toy Program of the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association has been making these wooden toys for donation to children's organizations throughout San Diego County for over 25 years. The purpose of this book is two-fold: first, to provide plans and step-by-step instructions for making 15 of the Program's most popular toys; second, to share a number of tips, techniques, and jigs unique to toy making that members of the Toy Program have found to be of great use for safely machining small toy parts. The book focuses on making toys that are safe for children, and describes the design of toys in terms of how children play with them. For example, toddlers learning to walk need a toy with a push stick so they can see the toy as they walk and push it. The push stick not only helps for balance and to guide the movement of the toy but also teaches directional control. On the other hand, toddlers who are comfortable walking often enjoy pull toys that might require walking backward to see the movement of the toy. Included are projects for beginners as well as experienced woodworkers. We hope that the information in this book will help the user find pleasure in making wooden toys for their children, grandchildren, and friends, as well as for donation to child oriented organizations such as day care centers, health clinics, and pre-schools.
