Bright and Bold Coasters Yarn Light worsted cotton or cotton/hemp blend yarn, about 100 yds (92 m) each, in 3 colors Shown: Plymouth Yarns “Grass”, 9086 Red (A), 9072 Aqua (B), 9089 Multi (C). Sample Project 2: Bright And Bold Coasters Version A: Double Layer Cotton/Hemp These coasters can be made of either cotton or cotton/hemp blend. Acrylic yarn does not absorb liquid, so is less useful for coasters. What you’ll learn How to read a pattern with several steps How to measure and adjust gauge How to attach a new yarn and work single crochet edging, including corner increases How to join two stitches with a slip stitch How to finish a project with steam blocking Troubleshooting—Common Granny Square Mistakes Mistake #1— If the first round contains 3 or 5 groups of 3 dc, the resulting shape will not be a square, and the increases won’t be correct for keeping it flat. Swatch on left shows result of 5 dc groups in Rnd 1; swatch on right shows result of 3 dc groups in Rnd 1. Mistake #2— If the joining sl st at the ends of rounds is worked around instead of into the chain, a hole results, and in a following round, it’s then easy to interpret that hole as a ch-1 or ch-2 space needing to be worked in. This results in too many 3-dc groups on the side where rounds begin and end. Markers show slip stitches worked around the beginning chain. Mistake #3— This square lost a corner, at the marked spot, because there’s only one 3-dc group in the corner space, instead of the proper corner increase.
