Some Backstory Starr Casas, a veteran rootworker and traditional conjure woman, has been helping people for over 35 years through her ancestral art of old style conjure. In Divination Conjure Style, she discusses the history of methods such as playing-card divination and pendulums, and also offers practical information so that the reader can master these techniques themselves. Divination has always been around, even before biblical times. In Ezekiel 21:18–23, God tells Ezekiel that the king of Babylon will cast arrows at the crossroads in front of Jerusalem. In this chapter, God specifically mentions how the arrows tell the king to capture Jerusalem and enslave the Hebrews. Divination is a part of God’s work and there’s nothing evil about it, although some Christians and religious folk may think otherwise. The Old Testament is proof that divination was a big thing: it was used for planting crops, arranging marriages, helping with births, and discovering who was really right or wrong. Setting Up An Ancestor Altar If you don’t have an altar already, you’ll need to set up a small table so you have somewhere to call on your ancestors and to lay out your cards. (I’m sure most already know this, but I’m just throwing this out there because there may be someone reading who has never set up an ancestor altar in their life or doesn’t have a clue where to start. So if you already know this information, please forgive me while I explain how to set up for those who may not yet know how.) When you have decided where you will be placing your altar, you’ll need to cleanse the space. Take your wash and wipe down the wall and the floor where your altar will be. Also wipe off the table really well. Then cleanse the inside and outside of your doors coming into your home. Finally, cleanse your stoop and sidewalk with the remaining wash. Cleansing A Candle Before you do any type of work with a candle, you should clean it first. I mean, think about it. That candle has probably sat on a store shelf for who knows how long. How many folks have picked it up and looked at it? I believe candles hold a memory; they pick up our feelings. If someone who is depressed or down and out picked up the candle before you, then I believe some of those feelings got on the candle. Or how about someone who is very angry? The first thing you need to remember is that you are not the only one in the store looking for candles. Therefore, you are not the only one picking them up and looking at them. Not everyone has a clean spirit on them. Some folks carry the spirit of envy, jealousy, hatred, and God only knows what else. Then there are those folks who have such a negative spirit about them you can almost taste it when you are around them. You don’t want any of that mess mixed in with your work. Creating Your Own Bone Set The best way to understand a bone in a reading is to understand the traits of the animal the bone came from. By learning the traits of the animals, you can put the meanings to work in a layout and not have to make shit up. I’m not talking about anybody; I’m just stating the facts. If you are going to throw the bones, then do it right. Understand the animal whose bones you are working with. I’m not saying anybody else is right or wrong; I’m saying use your common sense and think for yourself. If the animal is shady and tricky, then the bones will represent that in a reading. If the animal is loyal or lucky, then their bones will represent that aspect in a reading.
