Editorial Reviews 5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to initiate planning a solar system The authors have done a nice job summarizing the key considerations for planning, understanding or buying a solar system or components. There is necessary technical jargon but we’ll explained and easy to follow examples, enough to point one in the right direction on what terms mean and how to apply them to sizing various components of the system. The book is true to its claim “A technical guide on how to design, install, maintain …… solar power systems for your home.” A good value with useful references to other resources one may want to consider. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Solar design DIY Solar Power for Beginners. First of all I give this a 5 Star because it is not your basic generic Solar install instruction manual. I will admit that this book will be a bit too technical for some. But if your going to install your own Solar System and be able to maintain it yourself you might want to take a course in basic electronics first. The information and theory that is contained in this book is needed to properly install and maintain a solar system. The formulas that some critics say are for geniuses are all covered in the first semester of any electronic/electrical training course and are the basics of dealing with electrical circuits. The individual who complained about the book containing Kirchhoff’s voltage law had better avoid installing their own solar system or they will be at the mercy of someone else to fault find any problems. The reason I bought this book is because it was more than just basic theory and solar install manual. In fact it was because of the comment that it is “too technical” that drew my attention. And I agree it is a little bit technical - Perfect. - I have an electronic background and too many of the other solar install books did not cover the technical aspects of the install such as the coefficient for temperature . if your going to seriously considering installing a solar system that is grid tied, you need to know all these factors as the inspectors will be calculating those variables depending on where you live. If your going to be Grid tied, there are still going to local electrical code regulations that you will need to figure out that are not contained in this book and frankly could not be because they will change from state to state and province to province. For example 1) In Canada we need a disconnect switch which is able to stop the solar panels from actually producing electricity encase of emergency. (turning off a simple DC breaker does not stop the panels from producing power). What is required will be very different if your using a String inverter or Micro inverters. 2) Where I live they have regulations on where this disconnect switch is located, distance from power meter, and height off the ground ect. 3) Grounding regulations is a huge deal. You need to use the right size cable and cannot daisy chain your grounding cable such that if one panel is removed it breaks the chain. 4) Panels must be installed 24” away from the edge of the roof and peaks for emergency personal ( not the case with Solar shingles) 5) Structural engineer has to approve any roof mounted solar panel design. …some of the things you will have to find out from your local electrical code regulations. Overall this book is an excellent reference to properly design a solar system . 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to designing and installing solar PV systems I’m a big fan of solar power and want to add it to my house. This book is comprehensive, detailed, easy to read, and man it scares me. You really need a lot of competence to design and install your own solar system, especially the more complicated systems, like hybrid power. If you mess up, you could be electrocuted or set your house on fire. On the other hand, if you want to do a smaller installation or a simpler one, and already have a lot of electrical experience, this is what you need. I am happy I bought the book. It showed me all the factors to consider in the design and construction of a solar system. This is not a homeowner’s first DIY project. If you already have some electrical experience, this could take you to the next step. It is ideal for electricians who have not yet done solar, technicians and engineers who have a strong background to build from, and folks who have succeeded at other electric power DIY projects. It is also useful for the technically-minded homeowner who wants to hire out the job, but wants to understand what the contractor is talking about. There are excellent rules of thumb to help one decide on different systems. The book is filled with example calculations, which look correct to me. The book takes you through all the important steps in the process. It even explains what a screwdriver is (ha ha, I’m not kidding). Seriously, if you haven’t got that down, you’re in trouble. 5.0 out of 5 stars Want to slash utility bills? You need this book! I've long wished to run my household on solar power; at least as much of it as possible, but I didn't know where to begin. A big DIY'er, I couldn't make myself pay the installation rates the one-stop solar companies charge. In addition, I would've been required to buy whatever type of solar panels they carried. I've especially been looking into solar power as an option with the various states of turmoil in today's world, thinking anything I can take off the grid is a good thing. With the very specific instructions, calculations, and diagrams in DIY Solar Power for Beginners... and a licensed electrician in the family... I think I'm ready to take the next step. I would highly recommend this book to anyone even thinking about turning to solar-powered energy.
