Drawing Oil Pastel Acrylic Cartooning Special subjects Dogs & Puppies What a treat to draw these endearing, fabulously furry creatures. In this book you’ll learn the nuances of fur, whether short and straight, curly and shaggy, or long and flowing. I’ll also teach you some handy tricks about rendering white fur on white paper, as well as how to alter elements of a photo to create a more attractive composition. We’ll consider the importance of light and dark values and learn how to use a wide range of them in a good portrait. Buy yourself a few pencils, an eraser, and some quality paper, and let’s explore the world of pet portraiture together! —Cynthia Knox The following exercises focus on specific features and demonstrate how to go from a simple sketch to a finished feature in three manageable steps. Eyes Fill in the darkest areas with several layers of 2B graphite, using firm pressure. Leave the white of the paper for the reflective areas. Next add light shading to the white edges. Then lightly fill in the iris. Ears Lighten the outline with an eraser. Then begin sketching in the fur in the direction of growth, keeping the strokes short. Apply three more layers to build density. Noses Draw small outlines of the moisture highlights. Then fill in the dark background. Draw the fur around the nose and above the mouth with short strokes. Gently blend with a tortillon, and pull out light strands with the edge of a kneaded eraser. Lastly, draw whiskers with quick, curved strokes. Paws Blend the entire paw, following the direction of fur growth. Then use the edge of a kneaded eraser to pull out streaks of light fur. With simple step-by-step projects that start with basic shapes and progress to detailed, realistic final drawings, readers will learn to draw a variety of interesting canines. Pug A large aperture setting was used to photograph this darling pug, resulting in sharply focused eyes and a blurred body. To recreate the blurred effect, you’ll need to get out your blending tools—the tortillon and chamois cloth—and start smudging some graphite. Terrier When rendering a dog that is predominantly white, it’s a good idea to create a black-and-white copy of your color reference photo. Values will be clearer, and you’ll find that your finished artwork reflects a more accurate representation of the subject. Dachshunds When drawing two similar dogs, like these two Dachshunds, it is important to identify and translate the differences between them. You don’t want to end up with a drawing of two dogs that look identical. With this in mind, work on both dogs simultaneously.
