With a preface by Jimmy Santiago Baca, Dreaming America: Voices of Undocumented Youth in Maximum-Security Detention is a bi-lingual (Spanish/English) collection of poems by children ages 13¬ 17 in maximum-security detention. The crimes of these teens: Entering the United States without papers. The poems were composed in weekly writing workshops devised by poet Seth Michelson over the past two years. Edited by Michelson, and with a preface by Jimmy Santiago Baca, Dreaming America is a gesture of hospitality, an invitation to Americans to share in the lives of children who believe in the United States as a land of hope. These young people are facing prolonged detention and deportation but U.S. federal law does not guarantee them the right to appointed counsel. Settlement House Books will donate proceeds from book sales to the nonprofit legal representation of these children.
