"Gilgamesh" means "hero" and he is the protagonist of a journey in the form of epic poetry. The text was written prior to Homer's epic by at least 1,500 years. They form various poems which in turn make up the long legendary poem about the demigod king Uruk or Warka reigning in Babylon. He travels with his companion Enkidu to win the guardian of the cedar forest. The Babylonian goddess of love Ishtar, corresponding to Aphrodite and Venus, offers herself in marriage to Gilgamesh but he refuses and together with Enkidu destroys the divine bull sent to destroy them. In revenge, the gods kill Enkidu. His spirit returns to earth to tell Gilgamesh the secrets of the afterlife. Then the journey takes Gilgamesh to Utnapishtin who survived the great flood of Babylon to learn about the secrets of immortality. The magical plant of immortality is stolen from Gilgamesh by a snake. The tale originates in Sumeria and the epic narrative was augmented in the Babylonian Akkadian language with twelve tablets discovered in the library of King Ashubanipal (669-630 BC).
