Material objects cannot contain evil, right? The answers to these questions will be at the heart of this book. Along the way, we will explore the history and lore of sinister relics, asking: • What is the origin of demons? • What role did demons play in the development of civilization? • What is that role today? • According to the evidence, could demons be real? Can people really become possessed? • Are curses real? Can material objects contain evil? What about places? • What can we do to protect ourselves, according to historical records? It may seem preposterous to ask such questions. Surely, in the age of science, we know better than to believe in silly superstitions about demons and evil entities. Material objects cannot contain evil, right? “What is history, but a fable agreed up?” History contains numerous accounts of cursed relics and even places, but as Napoleon Bonaparte famously asked, “What is history, but a fable agreed upon?” Because archaeology is the study of human activity through the recovery and analysis of material culture, many more scientific tools and methods are used to determine the difference between truth and fable. In fact, scientists in Morocco are conducting clinical research into the molecular composition of evil spirits and how they may be more like germs than devils. They even claim to have developed mathematical formulas to prove the existence of evil spirits, as well as calculate their movement and behavior (Dieste, 2014). Evil Demons and Protective Spirits Everyday Demons The belief in a wide variety of evil demons and protective spirits heavily influenced the life of Mesopotamians. The label of demons as avatars of evil allowed ancient people to identify a threat like disease or bad weather so that they might fight it by using the proper rituals. Throughout Mesopotamian history, the belief in the existence of evil and protective forces was rooted deep into their psyche. They did not see these entities the same way we might today. Baphomet During one ritual, secret society initiates worshipped at an altar to Baphomet that was adorned with three skulls of Masonic martyrs, including that of Jacques de Molay. As they worshipped, it was said that Lucifer appeared as a shining figure in physical form. Another account places the doctor during a similar ritual in Sri Lanka, where he saw woman who looked dead, or at least close to it. Out of nowhere, the woman got up and crawled over to an altar under a Baphomet statue, before being burned alive by the Brothers of the Lodge, as they chanted demonic evocations. Cernunnos As early as seven centuries before Christ, an inspired pagan artist carved an image of a giant stag-headed god into a glacially smoothed rock face in the northern Italian Alps. The being in the ancient petroglyph is portrayed standing, covered in a long, fullbody garment, with tall, spiky antlers atop its head. Many scholars agree that this carving represents what is perhaps the earliest known artifact of the Celtic god Cernunnos, a primitive lord of forests, nature, and fertility. Not for the faint of heart! Fair warning: This book contains frightening accounts of demonic possession, ancient “human sacrifice, and gruesome descriptions of heinous but true archaeological discoveries. This book is not for the faint of heart or easily frightened. If you find that it is too disturbing, try not to worry. The last chapter will include ways to protect yourself and loved ones against malevolent forces, as well as practical advice from experienced exorcists. “Fear is pain arising from the anticipation of evil.” –Aristotle
