BEAD STRINGING WIREWORK CHAIN MAKING FABRICATING METAL METAL CLAY RESIN The Absolute Beginner's Guide--Learn By Doing * Step-by-Step Basics + Projects BEAD STRINGING Bead stringing is one of the most popular jewelry-making methods. The basics are easy to pick up, and considering the infinite types of beads available to jewelry designers, there are tons of designing possibilities. The process of arranging collections of beads in various patterns and color combinations makes this type of jewelry making very appealing. It is helpful to have a feel for color and form when creating bead strung jewelry. WIREWORK Wire is a versatile medium that is used in many types of jewelry making, such as fabrication and soldering. It can stand on its own or can be teamed up with other materials such as beads and found objects. Once the basics of wirework are mastered, there are all kinds of possibilities for constructing jewelry. Use wire for forming findings, connecting components, or creating wire-based jewelry designs. CHAIN MAKING The heyday of chain making dates back to the days of chain maille when small links of metal were connected together to form chains as well as protective body armor. The technology behind chain making is relatively basic: wire is formed into links and then connected together. In jewelry making, the links are also called jump rings. Once enough jump rings are made, the only other skill required is to connect them together. For most chain making, no soldering is required as long as the jump rings are made well and attention is paid to the ratio of wire diameter to mandrel diameter; this will ensure strong jump rings that do not come apart. The more precisely jump rings are cut, the better quality the rings and the more secure the finished chain will be once all of the rings are connected. A variety of jewelry mediums and methods, from bead stringing and wirework to chain making, metalwork, resin, and more. FABRICATING METAL Turning sheets of metal and rolls of wire into jewelry components using hand tools and no soldering is called metal fabrication. Metal fabrication techniques prepare metal pieces for the soldering process, but there is still a lot of interesting jewelry to be made by exclusively using fabrication techniques. Like any type of jewelry making, it takes practice, but the basics are not that difficult to master. It can also be a lot of fun as you pound, stamp, and bend metal to your will. METAL CLAY Only around since the 1990s, metal clay is relatively new to the jewelry-making world. In this brief amount of time, it has become extremely popular with all kinds of jewelry artists, from those who originally worked with metal to bead lovers as well. This clay is a combination of water, metal particles (silver, copper, brass, or gold), and natural binding materials. It is possible to cut, roll, and form this material into all kinds of shapes and textures. However, unlike other clays, metal clay must be fired at higher temperatures in order to burn out the organic materials. Once these are gone, the clay becomes a solid piece of metal. It is as amazing as it sounds, and while those who have been working with this material seriously for years have created extremely intricate jewelry designs and developed a huge number of metal clay techniques, the basics are quite achievable for anyone who is ready to experiment and practice with this remarkable medium. RESIN Also sometimes referred to as two-part epoxy, resin used for jewelry making is a synthetic material made up of a polymer product (the resin) and a hardening agent. Mixed together, they eventually turn solid and can be used for casting items, adhering elements together, or coating components. Resin products are easily available at most craft stores and many home improvement or hardware stores. Prefabricated resin products in the form of beads, charms, and finished jewelry items are also available and fairly popular. Resin jewelry is lightweight, colorful, and fairly easy to make. When mixing resin products, make sure to follow all manufacturers’ safety guidelines and work in a well-ventilated area. Safety equipment such as a respirator, disposable gloves, dust mask, and goggles should be available when working with resin.
