This clay is a combination of water, metal particles (silver, copper, brass, or gold), and natural binding materials. It is possible to cut, roll, and form this material into all kinds of shapes and textures. However, unlike other clays, metal clay must be fired at higher temperatures in order to burn out the organic materials. Once these are gone, the clay becomes a solid piece of metal. It is as amazing as it sounds, and while those who have been working with this material seriously for years have created extremely intricate jewelry designs and developed a huge number of metal clay techniques, the basics are quite achievable for anyone who is ready to experiment and practice with this remarkable medium. RESIN Also sometimes referred to as two-part epoxy, resin used for jewelry making is a synthetic material made up of a polymer product (the resin) and a hardening agent. Mixed together, they eventually turn solid and can be used for casting items, adhering elements together, or coating components. Resin products are easily available at most craft stores and many home improvement or hardware stores. Prefabricated resin products in the form of beads, charms, and finished jewelry items are also available and fairly popular. Resin jewelry is lightweight, colorful, and fairly easy to make. When mixing resin products, make sure to follow all manufacturers’ safety guidelines and work in a well-ventilated area. Safety equipment such as a respirator, disposable gloves, dust mask, and goggles should be available when working with resin.
