Also included is a chapter on the very special Boss 429 engine, as well as an extra chapter on the Ford 351 Cleveland, Ford’s little brother to the big-block Preparation and Removal Here, the engine and transmission are being removed as a unit since both are to be rebuilt. However, it is not necessary to remove the transmission with the engine, since it may be safely unbolted from the engine while still in the vehicle. Disassembly There is very little doubt as to the application this piston was designed for and also which engine bank it fit into. Lima series engines, with the exception of the 429 Super Cobra Jet, came equipped with cast-aluminum pistons. Inspection and Cleaning With the deck surface cleaned, we’re ready to continue the checking process to determine what machining steps will be necessary. Note: The 385-series Ford engines have three different deck heights. Your deck height should be checked and noted prior to machining. Machining and Parts Selection There are a few simple oiling system modifications that will greatly aid oil flow and ensure the longevity of your engine. The oil passage that is located at the point where the oil filter is mounted to the block is enlarged, blended, and chamfered with a high-speed grinder to assist the flow of oil. Assembly Before installing the timing chain cover and water pump, take note that this lower bolt hole extends into the water jacket. A water leak may result if sealant is not applied to this bolt when installed. Installation, Start-Up and Break-In Think safety first and foremost when lifting the engine back into the car. The car should be leveled and blocked against rolling. The help of at least one or two friends to guide the engine and/or operate the hoist is a must.
