The joy of collage is that it can be created in many different ways. Composition Balance and Scale The scale of shapes and patterns plays an important part in a balanced piece of work. If everything is to the same scale, the picture may look lifeless and static. One of the most versatile aspects of collage is the way in which the size of images can be manipulated. Papers can be cut to fit any scale, therefore, work can be scaled up and down, stretched, reversed, and repeated. Whatever scale you decide to use, always work to produce a balanced final piece. Every time you move, add or remove something, the balance of the piece will be affected, so wait until you are sure about the placing of an object before gluing it in position. If you want to create a specific shape, scene or character, start with the outline, then fill in from there, working upward and outward. Or, if you have some key elements that you want to be the focal point, you can place these first and then build outward to create the desired effect. Project: Agatha Plume (materials are included in the book) Step 1 Start by placing the feather frill in the center of the page and then place the lady’s head on top, making sure her neck is sitting just on top of the frill, as shown. Step 2 Add the tomato to create the lady’s bust, slipping it under the feather frill. Bring in the egg to act as the lady’s body, being sure to slide it under the tomato shape. Step 3 Now start to bring in the final pieces, starting with the lady’s arm. Place this on the right-hand side of the design, tucking it under the feather frill and sitting it on top of the tomato bust. Step 4 To finish, bring in the lady’s wonderful accessories, adding the feather crest to the top of her bonnet and decorating this with the red and black butterfly.
