Army soldiers manned Yellowstone’s entrance stations, protected the geyser basins from vandals, occasionally gave talks at Old Faithful Geyser and other major park attractions, and answered visitors’ questions. Separately, hardy and experienced local frontiersmen served as scouts. Charged with preventing poaching in the park’s vast wilderness, scouts on horseback patrolled summer and winter, pitting their wits and stamina against the crafty wiles of illegal hunters pursuing elk and bison for commercial profit.
