A discussion with Míriam Bonastre Tur, author and illustrator of Hooky How did the idea for Hooky come to you? I drew two young twin witches and immediately fell in love with them. I gave them personalities, names, and background stories, and Hooky was born naturally. I wanted to draw a story that I could enjoy myself, inspired by the books and cartoons I liked as a child, with lots of magic, adventure, drama, and strong friendships. What is the art process for you as a graphic novelist? Do you start with the story or the illustrations? Sometimes ideas of dialogue or random scenes just come to my mind during the day, so I sketch them in my notebook. Those sketches, together with a general structure of the story arcs that I have previously prepared, serve as a basis to write each episode. Then I write the script, which I later adapt into panels using a storyboard, and I finally start drawing. Which character in the story do you relate to the most? Each character has a small part of me, but for a long time I felt I identified with Monica. We have a similar way of interacting with the world and with people, and I also dress her in all kinds of dresses that I would like to wear. However, if I’m completely honest with myself, I think I’m more like Prince William. What’s your favorite scene from Hooky? I enjoyed drawing so many scenes! I have a soft spot for those that are somewhat dramatic, emotional, or romantic. From this first volume, I would pick the most extreme moments for Dani (the witch’s house arc and the end of the castle battle). How did you first become interested in illustration? I can’t remember! Comics and illustration have been a part of my life forever. Like everyone, I started drawing as a child, but I never stopped. What’s more, from a very young age I drew entire comics that I invented myself.
