Prayer Plant Calathea Makoyana. Prayer plants have striking patterns on their leaves and come in colours ranging from wine-red to purple and pink. Some even have a velvety feel. They are the showstoppers of the plant world, and I suppose that gives them the right to be divas. The two main reasons why people fail to keep prayer plants healthy are watering with hard water and not providing high humidity. These plants will not tolerate tap water. You can use distilled or filtered water, but rainwater is best. In a pinch, you can use tap water left overnight in a container. They also want their soil to be damp at all times. Again, not soggy, but moist. When it comes to humidity, a pebble tray with water won’t be enough. When I say high humidity, I mean tropical-level high. Chinese Money Plant Pilea. I don’t know of anyone who didn’t immediately fall in love with Pilea peperomioides when they saw it the first time. Identified by their saucer-shaped leaves growing out of the crown of the plant, Pilea is also known as the pancake plant or UFO Plant. They’re undemanding houseplants and are easy to find, since they’re so famous worldwide. Pileas grow quickly, and if you give them enough light, they’ll double in size without difficulty. Just one thing about Pileas, you may see some tiny white crystals on the undersides of the leaves. At first, I was concerned and thought it was a type of pest. It turns out that they’re calcium crystals, which appear on some plants and aren’t detrimental to their health at all. Swiss Cheese Plant Monstera Deliciosa. Also known as the delicious monster, the Monstera deliciosa is a 1970s favorite. I am glad it is making a comeback, because no other plant can give a room that jungle feel quite like the Monstera does. The older the plant gets, the more fenestrations will appear on the leaves. If the plant has previously produced cut leaves and stops, it is a sign that your Monstera is unhappy. Check your watering habits and maybe move it to a brighter spot to see if the fenestrations return. The Swiss cheese vine (Monstera Obliqua) looks like a mini Monstera Deliciosa and requires the same conditions. Dragon Tree Dracanea Fragrans. These palm-like plants are pretty easygoing. If you're erratic in your watering habits, then dragon trees are perfect for you. They will survive unpredictable watering schedules (to an extent, of course). However, they do not respond well to overwatering. Too much water will lead to wilted leaves, or worse yet, root rot. To avoid this, take a “less is more” approach and make sure your dragon tree is planted in a pot with good drainage. I suggest watering with distilled or filtered water or rainwater, as these plants are sensitive to the chemicals in tap water. When it comes to humidity, dragon trees will do well placed on a pebble tray and with daily misting. They like the air to be moist, or the tips of their leaves will turn brown. Four of the most popular Dracaena houseplants are the Dragon tree (Dracaena Fragrans), Madagascar Dragon tree (Dracaena Marginata), the song of India (Dracena Reflexa), and Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena Sanderiana). Houseplants bring life into your home They produce oxygen and refresh the air indoors, they liven up small spaces, and they make the perfect companions since they don’t demand much more than a sunny window and some water. Of course, for those who have never grown houseplants before, the mere idea of bringing one inside conjures up all sorts of questions and concerns. Don’t different plants need different amounts of light? How much water is too much? If I have kids or pets, which plants should I avoid? Relax! Growing plants is supposed to be a joy-filled activity, so before you let all your concerns come pouring out, consult Houseplants 101.
