Sample Lesson: Promotion When a pawn reaches the other side of the board, it can be promoted to any other piece—it just can’t become a king or remain a pawn. We looked at this in chapter 2. But here is something special we haven’t talked about yet. Usually it’s best to promote the pawn to a queen, because the queen is the most powerful piece. But sometimes a smaller piece is better for the position. This is called underpromotion. Look at the diagram for an example. Those are powerful pawns! You should promote to a knight here to make an immediate checkmate—the knight would be in the perfect position to attack the king. If you were to promote to a queen, you’d actually get a stalemate!
