If You Can Cut, You Can Collage A great way to use contrast is through color. Complementary colors, colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel, have a high contrast value when placed together in a composition. Especially if they are an intense hue and side by side! Contrast Contrast is the varying difference between the elements that make up your composition. When you think of visual contrast, usually the first thing that comes to mind is a large difference between light and dark. Black and white images with high contrast have a lot of white and black and very little grey in between. Very dark and very light tones are dramatic and can add interest and drama if your collage is feeling a little dull. There are other ways to show contrast as well through color, texture, and shape, and the amount of contrast can change the mood and tone, draw extra attention to your focal point, and move the eye through the composition. Includes instruction on techniques such as: Drawing This is a technique that I would advise for artists that are first time collagists. It’s a way to add texture, color, unity, and movement while using favorite art supplies. Stamping There is a reason why we were all obsessed with stamping as a child—because it’s fun! There’s something very satisfying about the duplicative process of stamping. Stenciling A stencil makes it easy for you to make a consistent design or mark over and over again on different surfaces. Exercise: Mirroring Clip an image from your magazine stash or choose one from your clippings pile. You want it to be simple enough to have a recognizable silhouette, yet have enough features to still be visually interesting. Using your vellum or tracing paper, make a stencil by drawing over the edges of your clipped image. Now, use your vellum and transfer paper to make duplicates of your image. You can use solid paper, patterned paper, or other found imagery like a star field or open water. Make some duplicates facing in the same direction as the original and flip some in other directions by turning over the vellum stencil before retracing the image. To mirror the image horizontally, place your original clipping and then choose a duplicate clipping facing the opposite direction and find a logical point where the two elements meet. If neither of the patterns or colors overpowers the other, this makes a perfectly balanced composition and also demonstrates unity with variation. You can also mirror the image vertically or layer several to create a rhythmic pattern.
