INTRODUCTION: Forged in War. Tales of wartime Jeep adventures, where the trusty Jeep saved lives and won the day America’s greatest vehicle is the Jeep. Created out of intense prewar competition, the Willys Jeep served in World War II as a reconnaissance car, weapons carrier, supply truck, front-line ambulance, attack vehicle, ammunition hauler, and many, many other jobs. It became indispensable to American GIs and their allies around the world. CHAPTER ONE: A Legend Is Born, 1940–1941. The history of Willys-Overland and Bantam Motors and their roles in developing the wartime Jeep Here’s the first Jeep ever made: the Bantam prototype scout car. Its designer, Karl Probst, is seen in shirtsleeves leaning against the rear-mounted spare tire. Note the front fenders are cycle-type, probably taken from a Bantam passenger car. This vehicle no longer exists, though a replica of it has been built. CHAPTER TWO: The Willys-Overland and Willys Motors Years, 1946–1963. Peacetime and military Jeeps produced by Willys-Overland and its successor, Willys Motors The 1946 Willys was America’s first all-steel family station wagon. Painted a deep maroon with wood-look contrasting paint, it mimicked the appearance of expensive wood bodied station wagons that were the norm back then. It was handsome and practical and could hold up to seven passengers plus cargo. CHAPTER THREE: Mr. Kaiser’s Jeep, 1964–1969. In 1963, Kaiser Industries changed the name of the company to Kaiser-Jeep Corporation The new glamour star for 1964 was the Jeep Universal Tuxedo Park. This was a separate model in the CJ-5 and CJ-6 series, not an option package, and was an attempt to give the little Jeep a tad more flash and style. Notice the chrome mirror, hood hinges, and bumper. The color-coordinated interior trim and top, along with the whitewall tires and full-wheel discs, really dress up this CJ-5. CHAPTER FOUR: American Motors Takes the Wheel, 1970–1987. Jeep ownership transfers to AMC and Jeep’s U.S. business grows nearly 700 percent The final year in which postal and military Jeeps were produced by Jeep Corporation was 1970. The following year they came under the purview of a spin-off subsidiary known as AM General Corporation. Shown is a DJ-5A Dispatcher postal truck. CHAPTER FIVE: Chrysler in Command, 1988–1998. The Iacocca years and how his Chrysler Corporation built a whole new Jeep organization The final show vehicle created by American Motors stylists was the Jeep Comanche Thunderchief concept, which appeared in 1987 and predicted a future facelift that unfortunately never went into production. CHAPTER SIX: The DaimlerChrysler Fiasco, 1999–2007. The Daimler-Chrysler merger and how the German company caused Jeep to lose its way Despite its fame as one of the most luxurious sports utility vehicles in the world, Grand Cherokee has always maintained outstanding capability in all driving situations. CHAPTER SEVEN: The Road to the Top, 2008–2020. Jeep’s comeback was temporarily derailed by Chrysler’s bankruptcy Toward the end of 2018, Jeep unveiled its upcoming 2020 Wrangler-based Gladiator pickup which enthusiasts had been requesting for years. Response to the new truck was extremely good, and sales were surprisingly strong.
