Rudyard Kipling Joseph Rudyard Kipling was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Born in 1865 in India, that country inspired much of his work. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If—" (1910). He is seen as an innovator in the art of the short story. His children's books are classics; one critic noted "a versatile and luminous narrative gift." He was among the United Kingdom's most popular writers and died in 1936. SeaWolf Press has published 6 Kipling titles. Get all these titles: The Jungle Book, The Second Jungle Book, Kim, Just So Stories, Captains Courageous, and The Man Who Would Be King Jungle Book and Second Jungle Book The Jungle Book (1894) is a collection of stories by the English author Rudyard Kipling. Most of the characters are animals such as Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, though a principal character is the boy or "man-cub" Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by wolves. The stories are set in a forest in India; one place mentioned repeatedly is "Seonee" in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. A major theme in the book is abandonment followed by fostering, as in the life of Mowgli, echoing Kipling's own childhood. The book has 60 illustrations. The Second Jungle Book is a sequel to The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. First published in 1895, it features five stories about Mowgli and three unrelated stories, all but one set in India, most of which Kipling wrote while living in Vermont. All of the stories were previously published in magazines, often under different titles. Our edition has 46 illustrations, 8 of which are full page. Just So Stories and Kim Just So Stories is a 1902 collection of original stories. A classic of children's literature, the book is among Kipling's best known works. Kipling began working on the book by telling the first three chapters as bedtime stories to his daughter Josephine. These had to be told "just so" (exactly in the words she was used to) or she would complain. The stories describe how one animal or another acquired its most distinctive features, such as how the leopard got his spots. The book has 75 illustrations. Kim is the orphaned son of an Irish soldier and a poor Irish mother who have both died in poverty. Living a vagabond existence in India under British rule, Kim earns his living by begging and running small errands on the streets of Lahore. The story unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game, the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people, culture, and varied religions of India. It has 12 illustrations. Captains Courageous and The Man Who Would be King Captains Courageous, published in 1897, follows the adventures of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr., the spoiled son of a railroad tycoon. After being washed overboard from a transatlantic steamship, he is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman in the north Atlantic. It is Kipling's only novel set entirely in America. Through a series of trials and adventures, Harvey, with the help of the captain's son Dan Troop, becomes acclimated to the fishing lifestyle, and even skillful. It contains 22 original illustrations. The Man Who Would Be King is about two British adventurers, Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan, in British India who become kings of Kafiristan, a remote part of Afghanistan. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi follows the adventures of a valiant young Indian gray mongoose named Rikki-Tikki-Tavi as he becomes the pet of a British family in India as protection against cobras.
