Peter Wagner is a junior attending in orthopedic surgery at the Philadelphia General Hospital. During a late night trauma call he meets ex-con Russell Martino, a.k.a. – the Dashing Don, who discloses to Pete a rather peculiar bit of information. The tip triggers a re-evaluation of the case that imprisoned Martino, prompting the appearance of surly city Detective Hank Donovan.
