FROM THE BOOK: How to read scripture It’s been said that when we want to speak to God, we pray, and when we want God to speak to us, we search the scriptures. Studying the Word is an essential practice for any Christian for many reasons. 1. Spending time in God’s Word is equivalent to spending time with God. And you can’t spend time with God without His influence, love, light, and grace rubbing off on you. 2. Time in the scriptures invites reflection and inspiration regarding personal questions, anxieties, frustrations, and challenges. We all need that. 3. God’s Word teaches truth, and obedience to God’s truths will guide you in how to live a life full of happiness and connection. 4. God’s Word brings healing and power into your life. There is a transformative power found in the scriptures that can be yours if you decide to open them. 5. The scriptures lead us to Christ. They don’t just teach of Christ and fill us with Christ’s love—they actually help us come to know Him and become more like Him. There are few habits that will benefit your marriage more than making time in the scriptures a daily habit, both individually and as a 5 spending time in God’s word couple. In fact, it may be the single most important thing you can do to improve your marriage. There is no one right way to study the scriptures, but here are a few tips that help us: Find time to study alone and together each day Study for time, not for pages, and try to allocate a meaningful amount of time each day Begin and end with a prayer. Start with a question. As you find answers, ask more questions. °Keep a journal and write down your thoughts as you read. Make an action plan. Decide what you’re going to do because of what you learn. Live what you learn. Create a pattern of learning, living, and learning more. Be consistent and keep at it. You may not see an immediate change, but that change will come.
