From the Author Tenille Bettenhausen I have been a designer in the field of architecture for over 20 years (yes, I started when I was a toddler! HA!) and often found it hard to feel like the field of architecture was a very diverse space. Over the years, I have seen it become harder for architecture firms to attract and retain diverse talent. I recently read a staggering statistic that of the professionals in STEM related careers, only 28% of them were women. And that of all of the licensed architects in the United States, only .04% are African American Women. That's not even a whole percent! So I started looking for diverse books for my own kids, that highlighted and displayed diverse girls/women in STEM careers. I do believe that it starts when they are young, igniting the spark that the field of architecture is possible for them. However in my search, I found that there weren't very many kids books about the architecture profession at all. And in that moment, a book was born.
