"Hi, honey, how was your day?” Mom asks. “Fine,” says the child. “What did you do at school?” Mom continues. “Nothing,” the child says. If you’re a mother, you’re probably no stranger to a conversation like this one. You are genuinely interested and want to find out more about your child’s day, but you are met with one-word answers. There are many possible reasons that a child might not be interested in discussing his or her day. Maybe all the questions that bombard your child when he or she walks through the door after school are overwhelming. It could be viewed as an interrogation, and your child responds by bottling up his or her emotions. Or it’s possible your child may find it hard to tell you about the day’s difficulties, or struggles to recall all the things that happened over the course of the day. Whatever the reason, you still want to create an authentic connection with your child so that it’s comfortable for him or her to share not only day-to-day events but also hopes, dreams, fears, and more. That’s where Mom and Me comes into play! This side-by-side art journal is intended to help you and your child open the lines of communication for more meaningful conversations and learn more about each other through the medium of art. Draw and journal side-by-side on a variety of topics. Feelings - Mom Every day we experience different feelings. Sometimes we feel one main emotion, while other times we feel a lot of emotions. Think of at least three emotions that you experience regularly. Then consider a color or pattern that you would associate with them. For example, identifying red stripes as related to love. Feelings - Child Fill in the heart with at least three feelings that you experience often. Make the areas of each color or pattern as big or as small as you feel appropriate. Bigger sections, for example, can be emotions that you experience more often. Bullying - Mom We can encounter bullying at any stage in our lives, from preschool to adulthood. Sometimes we are the victims of bullying, but other times we may be the bully ourselves. Being involved in a bullying situation can be upsetting. It can help to share what has happened to us. Bullying - Child Draw a picture of a situation in which you experienced bullying and wished it would stop.
