Biddy Chambers gave her husband’s words to the world Chambers’s wife compiled a book of readings with one selection for every day of the year from Oswald’s lectures and talks. For the title, she selected the guiding principle for Oswald Chambers’s life: My Utmost for His Highest. The book was published in 1927 in England, and in 1935 in the United States. It has since become the best-selling devotional book of all time. In 1992 James Reimann published an updated edition, what he called a 'translation' into modern language. My Utmost for His Highest is available in two editions, 'classic' and 'updated.' Oswald Chambers’s Life and Legacy 1874–1917 Oswald Chambers was born in Scotland and spent much of his boyhood there. His ministry of teaching and preaching took him for a time to the United States and Japan. The last six years of his life were spent as principal of the Bible Training College in London and as a chaplain to the Allied troops in Egypt during World War l. After his death, the books which bear his name were compiled by his wife from her own verbatim shorthand notes of his talks. By their faithfulness in the ordinary circumstances of each unfolding day, Oswald and Biddy Chambers have demonstrated the significance and power of giving our utmost for God’s highest. The devotions of My Utmost for His Highest convey a spirit of being abandoned to God and available to people. Chambers’s words continue to influence millions all over the world. Wisdom from Oswald Chambers: “When God has brought us into the relationship of disciples, we have to venture on His word; trust entirely to Him and watch that when He brings us to the venture, we take it.” “Let God’s truth work in you by soaking in it, not by worrying into it.” “All of God’s people are ordinary people who have been made extraordinary by the purpose He has given them.” “I am indeed at my end and I cannot do anything more—but He begins right there—He does the things that no one else can ever do.” “All I do ought to be founded on a perfect oneness with Him, not a self-willed determination to be godly.” Chambers’s Words Influence and Inspire Christians Today Blanca, Christian musician “My favorite quote is toward the end of this incredible February 29 devotional: ‘We find faith by not only believing what Jesus says, but, even more, by trusting Jesus Himself. If we only look at what He says, we will never believe. Once we see Jesus, the impossible things He does in our lives become as natural as breathing’ (updated edition). How beautiful is this picture he’s painted for us? To not only take God at His Word, but to actually see Him working in our lives. This is a key reason God sent us His Son—to show us who He is.” Phil Joel, Christian musician, formerly of The Newsboys “In My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers spoke to those times that God is silent, when it seems like He isn’t hearing our requests—or worse, giving us bad things instead of good. ‘For a while you say—“I asked God to give me bread, and He gave me a stone,”’ Chambers says in the October 11 entry. ‘He did not, and to-day you find He gave you the bread of life.’ It’s hard to imagine the love our heavenly Father has for us because it far surpasses any love that we as limited, mortal beings are capable of. But it’s something we really need to grasp, because when we understand the height, the depth, and the width of His love, it really does change everything.” Amy Peterson, author of Dangerous Territory “We are never able to measure our own usefulness to the Kingdom. We can’t see our lives or our world from God’s perspective. After all, Chambers says provocatively, ‘If we make usefulness the test, then Jesus Christ was the greatest failure that ever lived.’ From a limited human perspective, that’s true: Jesus entered a world that was full of political corruption, social inequality, unfair taxation, illness, poverty, hunger—and when he left thirty-three years later, there were no visible changes in any of those areas. He died without changing the world. Or at least that’s how it looked.” Joni Eareckson Tada, author and founder of Joni & Friends “My eyes became wet when I read these words about God’s grace for right now: ‘It is the process, not the end, which is glorifying to God. . . . If we realise that obedience is the end, then each moment as it comes is precious.’ The process is the end. Oswald Chambers’s words revealed my agitation and impatience with my quadriplegia. I didn’t like being in it, or learning from it, in the moment—instead, I kept longing for better times in the future. Looking down at my paralyzed legs, I realized God wanted me to be patient now. Learn to accept hardship now. And discover a fresh dependency on and intimacy with my Savior now. Slowly, over time, the process of my growth in Christ became an end in itself.” Classic Language Edition Classic Language Edition Updated Language Edition Updated Language Edition Updated Language Limited Edition Updated Language Gift Edition Available March 2018 Paperback Hardcover Paperback Hardcover Paperback Faux leather
