Nature is amazing! It's full of secrets and incredible things. In this book you can find the answer to lots of questions, including: How do crickets sing? Why do turtles have shells?Do plants eat animals?Where is the secret of a tree's age? Here's just a few of the amazing nature facts kids will learn about in this book PLANT FOOD How do plants eat? They use sunlight, air, water, and soil to make their food. The roots absorb water, minerals and salts from the soil, which reach the leaves by traveling through the stem. The air goes in and out of the leaves by tiny invisible holes. With all of these ingredients, and with energy from the sun, the green parts of the plant make food, which the stem distributes around the entire plant. BREATHING UNDERWATER How do fish breathe? Instead of lungs, they have gills. If you look closely at a fish's head, you'll see that there is a slit behind each eye. The gills are inside these slits. In sharks, there are several openings on each side of the body. Fish drink water and force it through their gills. Blood reaches the gills to absorb the oxygen in the water, then the leftover water goes back out of the slits. LIGHTNING AND THUNDER STORMS Sometimes, either before or during a storm, the sky lights up with a bright light called lightning. Soon after, we hear the deafening sound of thunder. What happened? Lightning is like a giant spark that travels from the clouds to the ground. This journey is very, very quick, so quick that as it travels down to the ground, the lightning actually splits the air in two. The thunder is the noise that this "spark" makes when it splits the air. BIRDS ARE BORN FROM EGGS Did you know that before chicks hatch, their eggs provide all the food and water they need to survive? The parents take very good care of their eggs. They take turns protecting them and keeping them warm so they can grow. When the chicks have eaten all the yolk and barely fit inside the egg anymore, they push with their legs, wings, and beak and ... amazing! They are finally born! A VERY PECULIAR MAMMAL Why is a platypus so incredible? In some ways, this Australian mammal is just like other mammals -- it is covered with fur, it is warm-blooded, and it nurses its young. But unlike other mammals, it lays eggs! Also, its nose and feet are similar to those of a duck. In addition to all this, male platypuses are the only mammals that can make venom, like a snake. Amazing! SEVEN COLORS IN THE SKY What makes a rainbow? Sometimes, on rainy days, the sky clears up and the sun's rays peek out from behind the clouds. If raindrops are still falling, the white light of the sun crosses through the rain. As the sun's rays pass through each raindrop, they are divided into seven beautiful colors: An amazing rainbow is formed as millions of raindrops are lit up by by the sun!
