Central Park Place to visit: CONSERVATORY GARDEN The Conservatory Garden is the only formally landscaped garden in Central Park. It’s divided into three distinct sections—English, Italian, and French—each with its own features and planting style. Isamu Noguchi’s Walk Place to visit: SUTTON PLACE PARK A tree-lined green space tucked alongside one of the city’s only private streets. Though many will know the view from this spot, made iconic by Woody Allen in Manhattan, very few know how to find it. Chelsea Place to visit: HIGH LINE The conversion of a disused industrial railway line into an elevated park in 2009 created one of New York’s most popular and enduring landmarks. Worthy of a walk from top to bottom, it can be used as a kind of guide for exploring the west side of Manhattan. West Village Place to visit: STONEWALL INN The Stonewall Inn is one of the most culturally significant of New York City’s landmarks. The site of the Stonewall riots, it's considered to be one of the defining events in the gay liberation movement and the history of Western sexual politics. East Village Place to visit: UNION SQUARE One of Manhattan’s historic squares, the subway station beneath unites almost every subway line in the city, and the square itself is a meeting point for the busiest areas downtown. Nolita & Chinatown Place to visit: JOE’S SHANGHAI Joe‘s Shanghai draws Chinatown locals and tourists in equal measure to its large communal tables. it’s famous for serving the best soup dumplings in the city. Lower East Side Place to visit: NEW MUSEUM Founded in 1977 and moved into its stunning present location on the Bowery thirty years later, the New Museum is New York’s only mu- seum devoted exclusively to contemporary art. North Brooklyn Place to visit: THE BROOKLYN BARGE The Brooklyn Barge is a floating bar moored just off the Greenpoint shore. With picnic tables and umbrellas, as well as drinks served in plastic cups with colorful straws, the barge has a kitschy seaside charm to it. Brooklyn Riviera Place to visit: DUMBO ARCHWAY For more than a decade the archway has been one of the most popular spots in the neighborhood. From flea markets to yoga classes, food fairs to music performances, the space functions as a kind of urban park or public plaza. Brownstone Brooklyn Place to visit: VALENTINO PIER PARK Surrounded by a charming mix of new buildings and nineteenth-century warehouses, Valentino Pier Park affords some of the most idyllic views of green space anywhere in the borough, including direct views of the Statue of Liberty and the rest of New York Harbor.
