About the Authors Becky Savage Becky is the mother of Nick and Jack and the co-founder of the 525 Foundation. She is a prevention specialist and has been a registered nurse for over 30 years. She is a sought-after national speaker who educates teens, parents, first responders, and school officials on the dangers of prescription drug misuse. Becky is passionate about primary prevention through outreach, education, and support. She has a BS in nursing from Ball State University and an MS in nursing education from Bethel University. Becky and her husband Mike love spending time at Donnell Lake, Michigan with their two young adult sons, Justin and Matt. When Becky is not out on the lake or at home in Granger, Indiana, she can be found at an ice rink somewhere, or chasing her crazy dogs – Tucker, Cash, Sadie and Josie. Nick Savage Nick was a steady 19-year-old with a calm demeanor and contagious smile. He was a first-year student at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he was majoring in chemistry and microbiology. During Nick’s tenure on the hockey team at Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, he led his teammates to the state runner-up title. Coaches and teammates say he led by example, both on and off the ice. Nick loved playing ice hockey, riding dirt bikes, and listening to music. Nick especially enjoyed the family lake house on Donnell Lake in southwest Michigan, where he liked to be out on the pontoon boat, or around the bonfire, with friends. Nick lost his life on June 14, 2015, due to an accidental overdose at a friend’s graduation party. Jack Savage Jack was an adventurous 18-year-old with a crooked smile and infectious laugh who graduated from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana. Jack was captain of the state championship ice hockey team, where coaches and teammates say he led by example. Jack loved ice hockey, hunting, waterskiing, racing dirt bikes, and time around the bonfire. His favorite family pastime was wrestling with his brothers – whom he affectionately called his “bros” – and having fun with his friends at the family lake house on Donnell Lake in southwest Michigan. Jack was headed to Ball State University to major in business, until he lost his life on June 14, 2015, due to an accidental overdose at a friend’s graduation party. A Note from Becky... Educate Yourself and Your Teen About the Fatal Dangers of Opioids and Alcohol If you don’t have a chemistry degree and don’t get a regular DEA briefing, it’s nearly impossible to keep track of what our teens may run into out in the world. However, there are thousands of supportive resources that we can access as needed to help educate ourselves, our families, and our communities. I am a firm believer that teens should learn from their mistakes – not die. For Parents and Trusted Adults We can be the biggest influence in a child’s life. We love them, teach them, guide them, and want to do all that we can to keep them safe. Teens need concrete reasons to avoid alcohol and opioids. They need facts and evidence. We need to know what we are talking about if we want our teens to listen. Read #ONECHOICE thoroughly, educate yourself, and then have a conversation with your teens! I soon learned that I could help myself best by helping others." -Barbara Bush Since our beginning in 2017, we have been driven by the same ideas we initially founded our Non-Profit upon: support, empowerment, and progress. Nick and Jack brought so much love and goodness to the world when they were alive, and now this is our way of carrying on their legacy of love and goodness- through the work of our foundation, and through telling their story- including the fatal choice that forever changed our lives. We see value in everyone, and think it is SO important that everyone hears our message of prevention. Our Growing Family Nick and Jack are the oldest of our four boys. This is us at the very beginning. Our Family in Siesta Key One year before Nick and Jack tragically passed from an accidental opioid overdose on the same night. One Year Later... Our family of six is now a family of four one year later. This picture was also taken on Siesta Key on the same beach. #ONECHOICE can change everything. Never forget that.
