Ten step-by-step exercises House and a Light Pole Let’s start with this illustration of a charming little house in Goa, India. We will use either technical pens or a fountain pen, and black India ink to draw this illustration. I used a Parker fountain pen to draw the initial outline and shaded the illustration using black acrylic ink... Wood and Rusted Metal Texture Let’s paint these wooden doors framed by the rusted hinges. Such subjects are excellent for pen and ink sketching because of their abundance of textures... An Old DP Box While commuting in my city, I came across this isolated DP box. These are the boxes which house the electrical or landline telephone (yep! Some people still use them!) wires distributed in the surrounding area. The original paint had peeled in multiple places. People had stuck all kinds of paper bills over it. The weather had played its part in the wear and tear and rusting of the box. Weeds had grown around the box. A ‘normal’ person would walk/drive by the DP box with no more than a single glace. But for a sketcher, this subject is a wealth of contrast and textures. A Piece of Old Abandoned Machinery Let’s see an example where one of the ugliest real-life subjects can be made into an eye-catching illustration. We will use this reference photograph to draw this illustration. This abandoned piece of machinery was lying by the roadside surrounded by trash when it caught my attention. I stopped by to click this photograph. What was so fascinating about this? The abundance of textures, of course. Ten step-by-step exercises (continued) The Door Let’s paint this charming old door. Start with a pen sketch as shown below... A Stairway to Heaven Let’s paint this interesting stone stairway. Let’s begin by drawing the stairway like this. Does it look intimidating? I t does not have to be. Go to the next page to learn how to get this curve correct and the technique for drawing the steps. A Charming Little Lane Let’s paint this charming little lane. This illustration is painted from a reference photograph of a location in Goa, India. Wall of an Old House We will use the below reference photograph to draw this illustration. As you can see, the original wall is quite dull, grey, and depressing. But the illustration is very colorful and charming. Is this cheating? Should we draw strictly as per the photograph? Everyone will have a different opinion on this, and everyone’s opinion will be correct. There’s no right or wrong in art. After all it is art, not mathematics! Ten step-by-step exercises (continued) A Stone Temple The southern part of India is a treasure trove of ancient stone temples. One of them is sketched in this illustration. I have used only two colors (Violet and Sepia) apart from the black and white shades while painting this illustration. Sometimes a limited color palette can work wonders for an illustration. This is one such example. Buildings in Ladakh I clicked this photograph of some houses while travelling in Ladakh. Ladakh is a huge cold desert situated in the northern part of India. I t shares a border with China. The terrain in Ladakh is extremely rugged and uneven. So, the locals have adapted their housing to the elements. I f I had not seen these buildings, it would be hard for me to believe such densely packed buildings are built over such steep slopes. But here they were.
