A Note from the Author I never did love the saints. Because I never knew them. Oh, I could tell you the patron saint of athletes or musicians. But the saints I knew were dull outlines of immaculate lives, saccharine plaster images gazing vapidly heavenward. And I tried to be holy like that; I really did. But God made me passionate and intense, and the more I tried to become sweet and mild, the more I felt I would never be anything but wrong. Eventually I heard about St. Teresa of Avila, contented myself that there was at least one fiery female saint, and moved on. But then I stumbled across a book that told the stories of the saints—not just the dates, accomplishments, and implausible encounters with mythical beasts but also the sorrow, struggle, and idiosyncrasies. Suddenly I realized that these were real people, broken people made whole by grace, and that far from being the impossible standard I’d thought they represented, they offered nothing but hope. This is a book of stories, not an encyclopedia. Feel free to start at page 1 and keep reading to the end, skim the table of contents for stories that jump out at you, or turn to the back, where you’ll find the indices. Then again, maybe just say a little prayer and flip and point to see if the Holy Spirit has a new saintly friend to offer you. –Meg Hunter-Kilmer Inspiring Saints Include: St. Charles Lwanga & Companions: Royal Attendants Who Preferred Death to Sin St. Mary of Egypt: A Life of Depravity Handed Over to Jesus St. Magdalena Son So-Byok: A Mother Who Buried Nine Babies St. Martha Wang Luo Mande: A Quiet Homemaker with the Courage of a Warrior Sts. Timothy and Maura: A Couple Whose Marriage Lasted Only a Month Learning from the Lives of the Saints Saints Who Defied Expectations There are as many ways to be holy as there are souls ever created. Read about saints who will surprise you—a tough-as-nails poet, a brilliant scientist, a chain-smoking journalist, and a mischievous smuggler. Saints Who Never Gave Up In times when we’re tempted to give ourselves a little break from the pursuit of holiness, it helps to look to saints who endured far worse than we have, for far longer. Saints Who Had Great Adventures There is no greater adventure than following Jesus. God can work in broken, complicated, and mundane situations. Learn from saints who let go of their monotonous lives in exchange for exciting adventures with Christ. Saints Who Lived Ordinary Lives Are you afraid you are too ordinary to become a saint? Be inspired by saints who lived ordinary life so beautifully that everyone who met them was drawn into a deeper relationship with Christ. Saints with Difficult Families Saints don’t all come from idyllic family backgrounds. Learn from saints who rose to holiness in spite of challenging family dynamics. Saints Who Found Holiness through Suffering The pursuit of holiness is not absent from suffering. Learn from saints who teach us that holiness is not achieved by the removal of our difficulties, but in our willingness to follow Christ. Saints Whose Ruined Plans Led to Beautiful Things Obedience can open doors you never thought possible. Journey with saints who wandered, often for years, mystified by where the Lord was heading. All the while, God was at work. Saints Who Were "Failures" Hope becomes increasingly difficult as we cling to our own plans: the job, the healing, the spouse, the child. Be inspired by saints who lived lives of perceived "failure." Their stories of surrender will renew your faith in God's goodness.
