Warm and cool colors have less to do with intensity than they do with mood. If you look at the color wheel, you will see that the warm colors tend to be on one side of the color wheel and the cool colors on the other. When I am referencing warm colors, I am talking about anything from yellow over to red. The cool colors are on the other side of the color wheel, and I am speaking now of green through blue. There are a couple of colors that are generally in between, and these are purples that lean more toward the red end of the spectrum and greens that lean more toward the yellow end of the spectrum. Finding Inspiration in Unusual Places Many people forget to look at the world as a color palette. I like to do this because it brings me fresh inspiration for how to put fabrics together. Almost everyone has a cell phone with them at all times these days. So put yours to work for you. Create a folder for pictures you take that may give you color inspiration for your next quilt. Take some trees with bright red berries for example. The berries are juxtaposed with lovely brownish-gray branches. Take a picture! How about cereal boxes? The companies that make cereal have entire art departments devoted to the science of making things look goof. Take advantage of this and take a picture. Or what about washing dishes? (A mundane task for certain.) I have Fiesta Dinnerware. While washing these bowls, it struck me: Look at what a great color combination this is! For decades Homer Laughlin (the producer of Fiesta Dinnerware) has been committed to the science of color.
