Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World is a book written by David J. Epstein, published in 2019. The book is about the importance of generalists in a world that increasingly values specialists. Epstein argues that contrary to popular belief, people with diverse experiences and skill sets tend to be more successful than those who specialize early in life. The author explains that this is because generalists are better able to adapt to changing circumstances, make connections between seemingly unrelated fields, and think creatively.

The book delves into the idea that early specialization can often lead to a narrow focus that limits one's ability to learn and innovate. Epstein examines the lives of successful people from different fields, including athletes, musicians, scientists, and artists, and argues that their success is often a result of having a broad range of experiences and skills. The author also provides examples of how companies and organizations can benefit from having generalists on their teams.

Epstein draws on a wide range of research to support his arguments. He cites studies that show how people who switch jobs or careers tend to be more successful in the long run, and how companies that hire people with diverse backgrounds and experiences tend to be more innovative and successful. The book also explores the concept of "kind" versus "wicked" learning environments, and how these different types of environments can affect a person's ability to learn and adapt.

The author also explores the history of the debate between generalists and specialists, tracing it back to ancient times. He shows how the rise of specialization in the modern era has led to a devaluation of generalists, and how this trend is changing as the world becomes more complex and interconnected.

Epstein also offers practical advice for individuals who want to develop a range of skills and experiences. He emphasizes the importance of taking risks, experimenting, and seeking out new experiences. He also encourages readers to think about their learning style and to embrace "interleaving," or alternating between different types of activities to enhance learning.

The book has received praise from critics and readers alike for its insightful analysis and engaging writing style. It has been called "an essential read for anyone looking to broaden their horizons" and "a game-changer for the way we think about success."

In conclusion, Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World is a thought-provoking book that challenges the prevailing wisdom about success and specialization. Epstein provides a compelling argument for the value of a range of experiences and skills, and offers practical advice for individuals and organizations looking to thrive in an increasingly complex world.

A short book but with a good book for fans of both authors, but also many insights into free speech, creativity and the importance of libraries. Some words to take to heart, some words to live by, some words to free oneself (more) in the pursuit of artistic endeavours. Definitely a good thing to read. You don't know it yet, but chances are you need this book.

I was refuse to buy the book in this version based on some reviews, but finally decided to pull the trigger. This book seemed like the only official publication that would give it to me, so I finally bought it.
