In this book, I aim to break things down, sharing techniques for using different surfaces so that anyone can start to draw realistic animals in colored pencil. Of course, it takes time to build skills, but little by little those skills will improve. CREATING LIFELIKE ANIMALS What makes one portrait more realistic than another? It’s about… Capturing the quality of the fur, its softness, coarseness, or silkiness. Eyes that are so real they look like they could blink. The emotion embedded in the piece. Taking note of tiny changes in tonal value, which will help bring a piece to life, making it look three-dimensional and as though you could reach in and sink your fi ngers into the fur. The catchlights in the eyes—not just the bright white ones, but the subtler ones in the bottom of the eyes as well. The layering of color, as well as softly blending. The step-by-step projects are awe-inspiring in their realism and feature popular animal subjects Project 1: KITTEN Let’s start with this adorable, playful kitten. This project demonstrates why it’s always a good idea to get darker areas in from the beginning, as they set the scene for the rest of the drawing. Your darks and lights are the most important part of a piece, followed by details and color. Project 3: ZEBRAS Zebras make a fabulous drawing subject. Understanding their tonal values can be tricky, but it’s easier when you’re drawing something that’s just black and white. Project 5: HORSE Colored pencil can be a slow medium, with very detailed work that requires a lot of patience and concentration. That’s why I wanted to add a relatively quick piece into this book.
