Right now, women make up 50.8 percent of the US population. So ... we should probably make up half of Congress? Or at least a third of it? Right? Nah. That’s right. As of 2019, 23.7 percent of Congress is made up of women. Of 535 people in Congress, only 127 are women and only 47 are women of color. That’s 8.7 percent of the entire Congress. There are only four women of color in the United States Senate. Three of those four women were just elected in 2016! Here are the top ten countries when it comes to women in federal government. Out of nearly two hundred countries, we rank 79th.
