Sewing Knits from Fit to Finish: Proven Methods for Conventional Machine and Serger Know Your Knits Other than the singular common characteristic of all knits—that they stretch—the variety of knits available today is staggering. Some knits stretch very little, while others stretch more than you can imagine. From smooth and lustrous to loopy and bulky, the range of fibers, textures, and looks is alluring. Your sewing will be enhanced once you learn more about the types of knits manufactured today. Types of Seams Part of the testing process is to determine what kind of seam is most appropriate for your type of knit and the project. Experiment with both sewing machine and serger seams. Get these decisions out of the way before tackling the construction of your garment. Taking Your Measurements Measure over the undergarments that you normally wear. It’s fine if you wear form-fitting bodywear, but don’t wear it just for measuring. You want to record realistic numbers. Overlapping Seams To sew an overlapping seam, first remove the seam allowance from one edge (the edge that will overlap). Using chalk, mark a line to indicate the seam allowance on the corresponding seam edge. Place a strip of double-faced craft tape within the seam allowance, then remove the paper cover to expose the adhesive (A). Place the trimmed seam over the taped seam, matching the raw edge to the chalk line, and finger-press in place. Edgestitch along the raw edge. Remove the tape and stitch ¼” (6.4 mm) from the first stitching (B). Trim the excess allowance on the wrong side of the seam (C). This specialized seam type is used on thick knits whose edges look good when left raw. Fabrics such as felted wool and wool-blend bouclé are the perfect fabrics to sew with overlapping seams in order to reduce bulk.
