Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930) Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Scotland. He is best known for his stories about the ingenious detective, Sherlock Holmes, and his sidekick Dr. Watson. Doyle was educated as a physician and began writing stories while studying medicine. He published his first novel, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887. He followed that with three more novels and more than fifty short stories about Sherlock Holmes. His work was a milestone in crime fiction. Doyle also produced a number of other fantasy and science fiction stories. He credited his former university teacher, Joseph Bell, as the inspiration for Holmes. Many Holmes stories first appeared in magazines Sherlock Holmes stories first came out between 1887 and 1927. The most popular and common method of publishing these kinds of stories was through the use of popular magazines. Many if not most of the Sherlock Holmes stories first appeared in magazine format, most notably The Strand Magazine, but also others including Colliers and Liberty. The material was later combined in the novels that SeaWolf Press has published. Many illustrations for our books came from those magazines.
