Tips & Tricks you need to know about DIY wigs! Wig coloring basics Remember that wigs are composed of plastic fiber! Hair dye created for keratin in human hair will not cling to your wig; instead wigs should be dyed with materials that are formulated to tint plastic. This includes polyester fabric dyes, sharpies, high-quality artist markers, and some types of ink or diluted paint. Some materials work better than others and some have different levels of difficulty involved. All tints however are what I would refer to as “mostly” permanent. Depending on your color, you will most likely experience some level of bleed after you finish coloring your wig. Most bleeding can be prevented by very thoroughly washing your wig in warm water with soap. However, some dyes may continue to run in the rain or against the friction of a costume’s collar even after washing. While this is an extreme situation, it is a huge disadvantage to dyeing if it’s imperative that your wig not bleed at all! Choosing the right glue It’s always worth noting that there is not one “best” glue to use when styling a wig, only favorites. Personal preference is a big part of this: many stylists prefer different glue types depending on their consistency, holding power, and what type of wig they are making. I always keep several different glues on hand in my own arsenal, as I find that certain glues work best with certain projects. Whichever glue or adhesive you choose to use, be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and follow all of the safety instructions included in the product packaging. Working with heat Like other thermoplastics, wig fiber will soften and become malleable when exposed to heat, which is why tools like a blow dryer or flat iron are essential when it comes to altering wigs. Nearly every styling technique takes advantage of this heating trick. Physically changing the shape of your wig fibers will help your styling last longer than it might with only glue or pins. Remember that under extreme heat plastic can also melt. Using a heat gun instead of a blow dryer or placing your blow dryer directly against a wig that's not heat resistant can result in crimped fiber or solid lumps of plastic. Razors For beginners or stylists who are not confident in their scissor skills, a razor is a great tool for your arsenal. Straight razors or razor combs are also incredibly speedy for quick styling or if you need to chop off a large quantity of hair. For extra safety look for a razor comb; this tool is constructed from a razor blade safely embedded behind a comb’s teeth. This allows you to evenly comb through your hair as you feather it, while also preventing you from accidentally cutting yourself with the blade. As the razor skims over the wig fiber, it cuts away only some of the hair, which results in feathering. The harder you press with your blade, the more hair you’ll cut away.
